ROFFA

Kjell van Ginkel Siqueira, known as ROFFA, was born in The Netherlands and currently lives in Jundiaí, São Paulo. His vast knowledge in arts includes a Master’s Degree in education focused on street art from UNICAMP, a Bachelor’s and Licentiate Degree in visual arts, and a postgraduate degree in “Professional artists inside the classroom”, all from the Willen de Kooning Academie, in Rotterdan. Besides, he also has a second diploma in graphic design at the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts, and a technical course in marketing design at Nimeto, Utrecht.
Being the son of a carpenter and master builder, ROFFA grew up in the world of industrial materials, paint, and rubble. From helping out at his father’s shop, the artist became fascinated with machine that mixes paint, for its power to create ‘all the colors in the world’, and also for the potential of the spray cans that were at the store. This environment molded his passion for art, one that followed him in his artistic journey since 2005, along with working as an art teacher, something he has been doing for more than thirteen years.
ROFFA finds the poetics within the city’s essence, in transforming the urban ordinary into art, and the disruption of meanings. Rubble and trash, before nothing more than disposal, become now installations and inspiration to the shapes; street signs often represent law and order change into painting support or into raw materials to build new objects.
The culture of the place where the artist is located is the main inspiration to his artworks. In The Netherlands, ROFFA had a minimalistic approach in the shapes, aiming to reach perfection and harmony with his compositions, something he considered typically dutch. As he arrived in Brazil, ROFFA came across the visual plurality of brazilian culture, leading him to more unbalanced compositions and overlying layers.
His colors and way of painting are profoundly inspired by the hip-hop and the graffiti universes. In the abstract compositions, the strong influence of concrete art is noticeable, the solid and protagonist colors bring the essence of the Color Field movement.
ROFFA has participated in various group and solo shows, besides publishing two books, “DISRUPTIONS” and “O Meu ABC da Rua” (‘My street’s ABC').
